The Silesian Science Festival Katowice (ŚFN) has gained a visual identity that is not just a static set of colours and logos, but a dynamic metaphor for the research process itself. The concept, built on modularity, perfectly corresponds with the theme of this year’s edition: Experiment!

Modularity as an invitation to experiment

The key to understanding the new identity lies in translating the idea of science—dynamic and multifaceted—into the language of design. The visual concept is based on the assumption that experiment is a continuous process that leads to discovery and surprise. The identity achieves this through intentional contrast and constant experimentation with form, deliberately juxtaposing static and dynamic elements. Static elements (order and structure) are represented by vertical and horizontal lines that form geometric shapes (blocks and “pixels”). These elements introduce a sense of structure, logical order, and precision on which verifiable knowledge is built. Dynamic elements (movement and experiment), in turn, constitute the factor of transformation and are expressed through slanted and diagonal lines, as well as more organic curved lines. These organic forms (including amorphous stains and spray streaks) symbolise creative chaos, the unpredictability of the research process, and the element of surprise that accompanies every discovery. The juxtaposition of these two aesthetics—the overlaying of dynamic stains and slanted lines on static blocks—becomes a visual experiment that each time produces a different, intriguing effect.

The power of the cubic module

The central element that enables this unlimited transformation is the cubic module. It is not only a graphic element, but also a practical tool for building the festival’s communication.

Structure and foundation – the cube, built from vertical and horizontal lines, is the smallest basic structural unit and symbolises stable knowledge, data, and logical frameworks.

Infinite configuration – the modules, like building blocks in a game, can be combined, shifted, and reconfigured. This makes it possible to create a variety of shapes and compositions, which perfectly reflect the complexity and thematic richness of the Festival. Their combinations generate movement and visual transformation.

Building contrast – by combining the static cube (representing principles and order) with dynamic elements (discovery and spontaneity), the visual identity tells the story of how science—based on structure—continuously leads to breakthroughs…

Identity as a metaphor for science

The new visual identity of ŚFN goes beyond standard frameworks, becoming an autonomous story about science. Modularity reflects a system in which individual disciplines are interconnected units. Through continuous experimentation with form, colour, and composition, the visual identity invites the viewer to active participation, encouraging: Discover, connect, change, experiment!
This year’s visual identity of ŚFN is a preview of a Festival that is itself—in a sense—a large, modular experiment. It is worth seeing with your own eyes what the dynamic structure of knowledge looks like in practice and letting yourself be surprised by the discoveries that await at the intersection of ordered forms and creative chaos.
