In less than two months, one of the largest popular science events in Europe will take place – the 9th Silesian Science Festival Katowice! Meet even more guests and special guests we have invited to participate in this year’s edition of the Festival. You can’t miss it!
The ninth edition of the Silesian Science Festival Katowice will take place on 6–8 December. Once again, we will meet at the International Congress Centre in Katowice to experience scientific wonders together. The slogan of the upcoming edition of ŚFN Katowice is ‘Dare to experiment!’. It is meant to be an encouragement to discover science in an unconventional way through experimentation and bold exploration of the reality around us.
The programme of the 9th ŚFN Katowice includes workshops, experiments, lectures, scientific demonstrations, debates and many other activities. An integral part of each edition is also guests, without whom the Festival could not take place. Check out who is among the invited experts!
● Grażyna Morcinek-Kalita – actively works for ecological and nature education, especially in the region of Upper Silesia and the Dąbrowa Basin. She conducts ecological activities within her own Development Workshop, as well as in cooperation with non-governmental organisations and universities, among others. She organises workshops and ecological campaigns to promote the idea of sustainable development and the importance of biodiversity.
● Damian Jabłeka – astronomer, science communicator and creator of the ‘Dotknij Nieba’ (‘Touch the Sky’) project, which he actively develops on the Internet. He promotes knowledge about outer space among children, teenagers and adults. He is, among other things, the organiser of the popular ‘Night of Shooting Stars’, co-organiser of the Astronomy Olympiad, and leader of the Polish team at the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics.
● Prof. Dariusz Jemielniak – Professor of Management at Kozminski University, where he heads the MINDS Department (Management in Networked and Digital Societies). He also serves as a faculty associate at the Berkman-Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard. During his professional career, he worked at such prestigious universities as MIT and Berkeley.
● Michael Morys-Twarowski, PhD – author of historical books including: Chrobry Rex, Łokietek Rex, Barbarica, and Dzieje Księstwa Cieszyńskiego (History of the Duchy of Cieszyn). He graduated in law and American studies from the Jagiellonian University, and obtained his doctorate in history from the same university. He is a finalist in the Script Pro screenwriting competition.
● Agnieszka Jankowiak-Maik – history and citizenship education teacher, Doctor of Humanities, publicist and educational activist, known online as ‘Babka od histy’ (History Teach). Author of the book Historia, której nie było (History That Never Was) and co-author of the series of historical comics for children Niezła historia (What a (his)story).
● Prof. Włodzisław Duch – full professor, head of the Neurocognitive Laboratory at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Modern Technologies, as well as the Neuroinformatics and Artificial Intelligence team at the University Centre of Excellence Dynamics, Mathematical Analysis and Artificial Intelligence. Employee of the Department of Applied Computer Science at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
● Szymon Drobniak – evolutionary biologist, ornithologist, graphic designer, poet, translator of English-language popular science literature. He conducted research at the universities of Zurich and Uppsala and is currently employed at the Jagiellonian University. He also collaborates with the University of New South Wales in Sydney. His research focuses on the evolution of birds, the plasticity of organisms in response to climate change, and the biological significance of colour and colour vision.
● Łukasz Bożycki – Doctor of Natural Sciences, photographer, journalist, programme creator and screenwriter. His photographic works have been awarded multiple times internationally. He is the creator and host of numerous documentary series, educational programmes, and radio shows – including the weekly popular science shows on Polish Radio RDC, ‘Animalista’ (‘Animalist’) and ‘Popołudnie RDC’ (‘RDC Afternoon’), as well as the documentary series on channel TVP 1, ‘Przyrodnik na Tropie’ (‘Naturalist on the Trail’).
