Did you know that in just one month we will be meeting at the 9th Silesian Science Festival in Katowice? Check out which personalities from the world of science will be joining us on 6–8 December at the International Congress Centre!
The extraordinary guests from Poland and abroad who will open up new paths of science for us during the Festival include:
● Chuma Mbambo-Lado –urban researcher focusing on health and well-being inequalities in European and South African cities. She studies how climate change and green spaces affect the health and well-being of residents, as well as how urban policies and local community actions can help reduce health inequalities between different groups.
● Natalia Bujak – sociologist by education, she has been professionally associated with the AGH University in Krakow for over eight years. Producer of ‘Bunkier Nauki’ (‘Science Bunker’) – a popular science podcast created at AGH. She is also a specialist in the field of creating popular science content on the internet, video production and social media management.
● Mateusz Kalisz – astronomy enthusiast who runs social media profiles gathering space lovers under the name AstroLife. As part of AstroLife, he popularises knowledge about astronomy and conveys it to his followers in an accessible way through video materials and live broadcasts. He is a graduate of the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice.
● Sebastian Szklarek, PhD – ecohydrologist at the European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, science communicator and founder of the ‘Świat Wody’ (‘World of Water’) blog. His scientific work focuses on researching the relationship between inanimate and living elements of the aquatic environment in the context of their impact on surface water quality.
● Katie Steckles, PhD – mathematician based in Manchester who conducts lectures, runs workshops and writes about mathematics. She completed her PhD in 2011 and has since been conducting mathematics communication activities in schools and universities, at science festivals, on BBC radio and television programmes, as part of theatre performances, in books and on the internet.
● Nina Mazurewicz – physicist and science communicator, author of the book Kwanty nie gryzą (Quanta Don’t Bite) on quantum mechanics and the e-book Kobiecy Pierwiastek (The Feminine Element) on female Nobel Prize winners. Mentor in programmes including NASA Space Apps. She is also developing a start-up in the space sector.
● Wojciech Orliński – graduate of the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Warsaw, teacher of this subject at the Miodowa High School in Warsaw. Columnist for Polityka weekly, author of several books, including the recent BUM! Wszystko, co musisz wiedzieć o chemii, żeby przeżyć kolejny dzień (BOOM! Everything you need to know about chemistry to survive another day) (nominated for the Golden Rose Award for the best popular science book of 2024). In addition to science, he is fascinated by pop culture and fantasy, hence, he also penned, among other things, the Juliusz Award-nominated biography Lem. Życie nie z tej ziemi (Lem. A Life Out of This World) (2017).
● Dawid Polak – biotechnologist and science communicator. He runs the popular science profile biotech.geek, where he shares the latest scientific discoveries, fascinating facts from the world of animals and plants, as well as the mysteries of nature and phenomena that remain an enigma for many.
