The programme of the 9th Silesian Science Festival in Katowice includes many new attractions, such as unique stages and special zones. One of them is the Science Fiction Zone, where we will embark on an exciting journey through the world of this fascinating genre. Ready for an adventure out of this world?

The Science Fiction Zone offers lectures, workshops, debates, exhibition stands and other activities bringing science fiction closer to the festival audience. The Zone is devoted not only to the future, but also to critical thinking about the present, in which progress and crises affecting the lives of individuals and communities intertwine.

See what the future may hold!

Can imagination outpace science? In the Science Fiction Zone during the 9th ŚFN Katowice, you will see how strongly these two worlds intertwine! The topics that will be discussed within the Zone include fascinating computer games, the rich tapestry of science fiction literature, and the ways in which science fiction can inspire the future.

Some of Poland’s most prominent writers of the genre will also appear on the Science Fiction Zone Stage. These will include Rafał Kosik, Michał Cetnarowski, Michał Protasiuk and Magdalena Salik. In the Zone, we will also host the premiere of a book containing unpublished interviews with Stanisław Lem: Zdziwienie i interpretacja, czyli literatury uczymy się ciągle (Wonderment and interpretation, or how we are constantly learning literature).

There will also be popular science lectures given by science fiction researchers from all over Poland. Among the invited experts are Agnieszka Gajewska, Krzysztof M. Maj, PhD, Paweł Frelik, PhD, DSc, Assoc. Prof. at the University of Warsaw, and Wojciech Orliński.

And that’s not all! In the Science Fiction Zone, we will also talk about computer games: ‘The Alters’, ‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’ and a new project from the world of gaming, which will be presented by developer Carlos Castañon. Visitors will also have the opportunity to listen to a concert by Bruno Lubas, composer of the soundtrack for the game ‘The Invincible’.

The coordinator of the Science Fiction Zone is Piotr Gorliński-Kucik, PhD from the Institute of Polish Studies of the University of Silesia.
