Lights, camera, action! Discover the extraordinary world of cinema in the Film Zone at the 9th ŚFN

We warmly invite all film enthusiasts to the Film Zone of the 9th Silesian Science Festival Katowice – a space of inspiring conversations and exceptional film screenings that will open new horizons of thinking and encourage you to delve further into the art of cinematography.

Like every form of art, film could not exist without experimentation. Creative exploration of new paths, narrative techniques and ways of conveying emotions through image enables cinematography to continue evolving and to explore the possibilities available in the twenty-first century. Film is also about people – artists, creators and audiences – without whom the unique cultural phenomenon that is cinema would not exist.

Step into the world of film in the Film Zone at the 9th ŚFN

The Film Zone is one of the special zones of the 9th edition of ŚFN Katowice. Together with lecturers from the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School at the University of Silesia, as well as invited guests, we will co-create this fascinating space. Those interested will have the opportunity to meet artists and creators, as well as representatives of the world behind the camera – renowned filmmakers who will share their passion and professional experience.

During debates and panel discussions, we will explore the most significant experiments in the history of cinematography and discuss the universality of film language – a language capable of bringing a team its dream Oscar. Together with experts, we will also reflect on whether contemporary artificial intelligence tools might soon replace certain film professions, and we will analyse the success of popular titles, their impact on cinema attendance and film festival audiences, as well as the perspectives of today’s viewers – does the ‘appetite for cinema’ remain strong? There will also be opportunities to speak with creators of Oscar-nominated films, a winner of the Student Oscar, and filmmakers behind productions such as the series Król and Heweliusz, and the films Ministranci, Silver, Królik po berlińsku, Biała odwaga and Ostatnia rodzina. Our guests will include filmmakers and lecturers from the University of Silesia: prof. Jan P. Matuszyński, prof. Marcin Koszałka,Bartosz Konopka, PhD, Piotr Domalewski, Natalia Koniarz, prof. Krystyna Doktorowicz, prof. Andrzej Gwóźdź, prof. Tadeusz Miczka, prof. Rafał Cekiera.

Moreover, we will have the chance to watch a range of intriguing films and to share our impressions afterwards in a truly cinematic atmosphere!
