The mobile zone of the Silesian Science Festival Katowice once again made an appearance in Wisła at the ‘Granatowe Góry’ literary and arts festival.

On Saturday, 6 June, as part of the interactive ‘Seeds of Science’ stage, Prof. Armand Cholewka from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Silesia, transformed the festival space into a spectacular open-air thermal imaging laboratory. Together with the presenter, participants were able to investigate:
whether it is possible to assess the greenhouse effect using a thermal imaging camera,
how a white T-shirt heats up in the sun compared to a black one,
how hot and cold water alter the thermal map of the blood vessels on our bodies,
how hot the interior of a locked car gets on a scorching day.

Furthermore, throughout the festival weekend, attendees were able to visit the ŚFN on Tour zone and the Seeds of Science space, where enthusiasts from the University of Silesia’s student research groups shared their love of science and knowledge:

‘Faunatycy’ Student Research Group – ‘A glimpse into the world of research – science from the inside’: in the exhibition area, visitors could see professional research equipment and fascinating zoological exhibits, as well as learn a wealth of interesting facts about animals.
‘Fauna’ Student Botany Research Group – ‘Plants under the microscope – discover their diversity’: participants viewed flora from a completely new perspective – they examined the amazing shapes of leaves, the structure of flowers, the structure of microscopic hairs, and even the scents of plants, as well as hearing about their everyday uses.
‘Planeta’ Student Research Group – ‘Biodiversity so tiny it escapes the eye – the amazing world of microbes’: in an extraordinary gallery of Petri dishes, visitors could see living abstract paintings – velvety carpets of fungi, creamy yeasts and golden bacteria – and discover that biodiversity begins where the eye cannot see.
