We’re launching the March instalment of ŚFN on Tour – Seeds of Science! On Friday 21 March, between 9.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m., we will be promoting knowledge, telling people about the Silesian Science Festival Katowice and encouraging people to study at the University of Silesia during the VI Knowledge Festival at the Secondary School no. 1 in Wodzisław Śląski.

Numerous attractions will await the participants: the ŚFN Katowice stand, the information zone of the Candidates and Alumni Office of the University of Silesia, as well as interesting lectures conducted by scientists from the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Silesia.

Zone of the Silesian Science Festival Katowice – Seeds of Science

The Silesian Science Festival Katowice is one of the largest popular science events in Poland and Europe, which attracts crowds of science enthusiasts every year. During each edition, we prove that science, presented in the right way, can awaken public interest in various fields and encourage people to develop their interests and passions in order to share them with a wide audience. At the stand, we will talk about the organisation of ŚFN Katowice and why you should take part in its upcoming 9th edition.

ŚFN on Tour – Seeds of Science is also an excellent opportunity for participants in the Knowledge Festival to find out more about the range of courses offered at the University of Silesia. The staff of the Office will be happy to provide you with information on such topics as recruitment rules and admission criteria and deadlines for the academic year. The zone will also offer the opportunity to learn more about scholarships, dormitories, student organisations, and study oportunities at the University of Silesia. There will also be a meeting with career counsellors for those interested.

Inspirational lectures

● 'Where do drugs come from?'

The lecture by Prof. Robert Musioł will give us an insight into the journey that medicines have to go through to reach the pharmacy shelf. Prof. Musioł will talk about the cooperation undertaken by scientists to get a new drug approved, and the demands placed on this process by modern medicine. During the meeting, we will also learn about the history of peculiar 16th-century treatments and the characteristics of the first chemical medicines put into use.

Prof. Robert Musioł – Director of the Institute of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Silesia. His research work focuses on investigating the mechanisms of action of potential anti-cancer and anti-microbial drugs. He has co-authored more than 120 scientific publications and 40 patents.

● 'Identifying hazardous weather phenomena using modern remote sensing methods'

At the lecture, Artur Widawski, PhD will talk about the problem of global warming, which is increasing the frequency of extreme weather events on Earth. The scientist will introduce the process of identifying (detecting) hazardous weather phenomena by analysing satellite images, radar images, and lightning maps. He will also present selected examples of extreme meteorological events, which will then be discussed in detail with the audience.

Artur Widawski, PhD – geographer, climatologist, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Silesia, member of the Climate and Climate Change research team. His research work involves the analysis of satellite and radar images for the detection of hazardous weather phenomena and the climatology of mountain and upland areas.

We encourage you to follow the ŚFN on Tour initiative, and we invite you to participate in the 9th Silesian Science Festival Katowice, which will take place from 6 to 8 December at the International Congress Centre.
