This year’s edition of the Silesian Science Festival Katowice will take place on 6-8 December. Once again, we will meet in the International Congress Centre to explore the mysteries of science and, thanks to extraordinary experiments, expand the boundaries of popular knowledge. Once again, there will be lots of scientific shows awaiting all those interested, which will present scientific issues in an engaging way and answer burning questions. This is a unique opportunity to share your interests with other science enthusiasts and to establish valuable scientific and educational partnerships.
Science shows are a permanent part of the ŚFN programme and are met with great interest from the visitors every year. Created for audiences of all ages and professions, they provide an excellent opportunity for independent learning and, in line with the theme of the 9th ŚFN ‘Dare to experiment!’, will inspire people to try their hand at experimenting and experience science in many new ways.
The activities presented at the Festival are intended to encourage experimentation within different disciplines and the creative combination of seemingly unrelated scientific issues. Creative experiments encourage us to open ourselves up to new experiences and face whatever the future may bring. The scientific shows will also give you a chance to have fun with science in a relaxed and informal setting, allowing you to learn more about topics that interest you and see for yourselves how science affects our everyday lives.
Scientific shows during the 9th ŚFN
During the 9th edition of the ŚFN, participants will be able to take part in nearly two hundred scientific shows located in the ICC’s multifunctional hall. This space, buzzing with science, will host unique experiments in such fields as humanities and social sciences, medicine and health, technology, nature, exact sciences, art and, as a new addition this year, physical culture.
There will be an opportunity to explore the fascinating world of anaesthesiology and ophthalmology in scientific demonstrations, as well as learn more about effective disease prevention or the use of VR simulators in modern medicine. In the library of the senses, we will learn about scientific issues through sight, touch, hearing, and smell, which will be particularly useful in an herbal cosmetics experiment (we will create our own cosmetics, among other things!). We will delve into the secrets of genealogy, learn about the art of calligraphy and, by solving cartographic puzzles, discover how Katowice has changed over the centuries. The event will also feature literary experiments and opportunities to spend time surrounded by books at the CINiBA library stand, learn about Chinese history, culture and art, and take part in exciting quizzes and language competitions (with prizes!) in English, German, Russian, French and Spanish.
All those interested will be able to discover the secrets of biodiversity in our region: unique ecosystems and rare species of plants and animals, as well as see an experiment showing what a real earthquake looks like. Together with other enthusiasts, we will also enter the colourful world of minerals and learn more about the causes, effects and ways to mitigate climate change. Participants interested in science and technology will be able to learn about the student space programme and see the construction mechanisms, innovative solutions and processes involved in building a racing car that takes part in the international Formula Student competition. We will experiment with virtual reality (robotics, 3D printing), modern drones (live equipment demonstrations and presentations of the latest models), a magical space of colours and chemical reactions (theory and practice in a portable laboratory), and we will also go beyond the limits of our imagination to create our own avatar.
