The workshop will allow you to learn more about Cuba, its culture and history by interacting with artifacts brought from this country. Souvenirs, figurines, clothing, and all kinds of artifacts carry personal stories and narratives about given places and cultures. One of the tasks of anthropology is to critically examine such narratives and the images they produce among their recipients. Cuba is often described as an "island as hot as a volcano", promising unforgettable experiences on sunny beaches, where tourists can relax sipping mojitos or daiquiris, taste "authentic" Cuban cigars or discover the cultural richness by touring the country in an old American car and attending music and dance events. But is that all? What lies behind the global image of Cuba and how can we learn the stories of its people through interactions with objects brought from there?
