The aim of this presentation is to take Festival participants on a fascinating journey in the footsteps of one of the lesser-known but extremely important battles of medieval Poland – the Battle of Grotniki in 1439. Although it was not a battle on the scale of Grunwald, its effects had far-reaching consequences for the politics and history of the country at the time. The presentation will show how modern archaeology can breathe new life into old stories – by combining the analysis of historical sources and the latest technologies, researchers have identified an area where a clash between the royal troops and the confederates led by Spytek of Melsztyn may have taken place. The search for the battlefield has been ongoing since 2023. Numerous monuments were discovered – both those that may be remnants of the battle itself and those related to the centuries-old history of the Nowy Korczyn region.
