Exhibition „Polish Science in the Interwar Period" as part of 4th ŚFN KATOWICE

Polish science in the interwar period was based on 25 active institutions of higher education, including 5 universities and 2 universities of technology, 48,000 students, resurgent academic life and significant success in various fields of science (from humanties to medicine and exact sciences) - this is how we can briefly describe the condition of Polish science and higher education between the wars.

The exhibition "Polish Science in the Interwar Period" presents selected outstanding Polish scientists who significantly contributed to the development of Polish and global science. Among 52 chosen Polish researchers, inventors and discoverers are:

  • Ludwik Hirszfeld - author of universally adopted blood groups (0, A, B and AB),
  • Eugeniusz Romer - father of modern cartography,
  • Jan Czochralski - author of the method of growing single crystals ("the Czochralski process"),
  • Gabriel Narutowicz - author of the first European water power plants,
  • Stefan Bryła - author of the first welded road bridge,
  • Rudolf Gundlach - inventor of the tank periscope,
  • Henryk Magnuski - inventor of walkie-talkie,
  • representatives of Lwów School of Mathematics.

The project was developed as part of celebrating the 100th anniversary of regaining independence and restoring the Polish state.

The exhibition prepared by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the University of Silesia in Katowice will be presented on the market square in Katowice on 11-31 January 2020. It is an accompanying event of the 4th edition of Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE (25-27 January 2020).

The 4th Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE is organised by: University of Silesia in Katowice (leader and author of the project), City of Katowice (host city), as well as Metropolis GZM and Marshall Office of the Silesian Voivodeship (co-hosts). The event is co-organised by: Silesian University of Technology, Medical University of Silesia, Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa, Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, University of Bielsko-Biała and Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice.
