The Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE has been invited by the Marshall Office of the Silesian Voivodeship to act as the ambassador of our voivodship during the Silesian Regional Week in the Polish Pavilion - the space in which we present our country during the World Expo 2020 taking place in Dubai. Scientists from the University of Silesia will go all the way to the United Arab Emirates to represent the ŚFN.
Between 27 January and 3 February, employees of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Silesia, Jerzy Jarosz, PhD, Associate Professor from the Institute of Physics, Małgorzata Karolus, PhD, DSc, Associate Professor, and Izabela Matuła, MSc Eng. from the Institute of Materials Engineering will carry out a series of workshops for children in Dubai.
Prof. Jarosz will conduct a design and construction workshop “Space Mice - Build and Launch Your Own Rocket”, where participants will be able to build various types of rockets, saucers, and flying objects (and then “launch” them using various launchers) and their passengers - friendly Space Mice made of paper. The workshop will last 45 minutes. Children of all ages are welcome to participate.
Among our proposed activities are the workshops “Renewable energy sources” and “Urbanisation and metropolisation of the region - building materials throughout the centuries”, which will be carried out under the common title “Become an engineer with the University of Silesia”. The activities are addressed to children aged from 5 to 12 years old, will last 45 minutes and concern various issues related to the history, development of construction and the industry of Silesia. Workshop participants will independently build a chosen device, vehicle, or building - those more creative will be able to design the object on their own, prepare appropriate elements and put the model together, while those younger and less advanced will be able to use ready-made and previously prepared kits.
Prof. Ryszard Koziołek, Rector of the University of Silesia, General Director of ŚFN, and Prof. Tomasz Pietrzykowski, Vice-Rector for International and Domestic Cooperation, are also part of the University of Silesia delegation to the Dubai Expo 2020.
Prof. Jarosz, Associate Professor, works at the Institute of Physics at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Silesia. He has been involved in teaching physics and natural sciences for many years. He is a science communicator and an expert in educational experiments. For many years he has been the Chairman of the Polish Physics Demonstrators’ Club. He is also the founder and coordinator of the Children’s University of Silesia, which helps young students discover their own passions and talents and supports their development. For his activities, he has been awarded twice in the competition Popularizer of Science, organised by the Polish Press Agency Foundation’s portal “Science in Poland” and the Ministry of Education and Science.
Małgorzata Karolus, PhD, DSc, Associate Professor, from the Institute of Materials Engineering of the University of Silesia is a specialist in crystallography and X-ray diffraction, as well as structural studies of amorphous, micro- and nanocrystalline materials. Izabela Matuła, MSc Eng., is a doctoral student in the field of materials engineering, and her research interests include the potential use of titanium alloys in medicine.
