Katowice - the European City of Science 2024

On Saturday, 16 July, at 4 p.m., during the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) 2022 in Leiden (the Netherlands) took place the ceremony of awarding Katowice the title of European City of Science 2024. It is a prestigious distinction for the Katowice conurbation, the region of Silesia, and Poland as a whole. For the first time in the history of this initiative, a city from Central and Eastern Europe was selected as the European City of Science.

The official ceremony awarding the title took place in the European City of Science 2022, i.e. Leiden. It was opened by Mariya Gabriel – European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. The event served as an official conclusion to this edition EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF).

In the ceremony participated: rectors and employees of all the universities of the Academic Consortium Katowice – City of Science, Marcin Krupa, Mayor of Katowice, Jakub Chełstowski, Marshall of the Silesian Voivodeship, Kazimierz Karolczak, Chair of the Management Board of Metropolis GZM. Marcin Wyrostek – an accordion player and a winner of the second edition of Mam Talent! (Poland’s Got Talent) performed during the ceremony.
