This lecture will take you to the dark and fascinating corners of the history of science, where researchers have pushed the boundaries of ethics, testing how far we are willing to go in the name of knowledge. You will learn about, among other things, the famous Milgram experiment, in which people, under the influence of an authority figure, administered painful electric shocks to others for giving incorrect answers! I will also talk about Philip Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiment, where ordinary people took on the roles of prisoners and guards – and the atmosphere became so tense that the study was interrupted mid-way. There will also be the story of Bryan Johnson, a billionaire and biohacker who is testing the limits of longevity firsthand, spending millions of dollars to do so. These are just a few examples of the many controversial experiments I will talk about during my lecture.
