Silesian Scientific Award 2022: meet the winners

The official award ceremony for the Silesian Scientific Award organised as part of the 6th Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE was held on 18 March 2023. The award is presented to artists, researchers, scientists, and other people contributing to the promotion and development of Silesian science.

The ceremony was opened by Prof. Ryszard Koziołek, General Director of ŚFN, Rector of the University of Silesia. The participants included: Marcin Krupa, PhD, Mayor of the City of Katowice, Waldemar Bojarun, Vice-Mayor of the City of Katowice, and Henryk Borczyk, Vice-Chair of the Management Board of Metropolis GZM.

The winners of the Silesian Scientific Award organised as part of the 6th Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE, chosen by all the universities co-organising the Festival, were announced during the official ceremony. The nominated persons are selected from the employees and doctoral students of each university according to its internal procedure.

Among the 40 nominations in three categories (i.e. Employee, Doctoral Student, Mayor’s Award) were 15 women and 25 men.  The nominated people were selected by the Award Committee, this year headed by Prof. Katarzyna Mizia-Stec, Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation of the Medical University of Silesia. In addition, a special award granted by the Mayor of Katowice to the person conducting scientific activity to the benefit of Katowice’s residents was also presented during the event. Marta Sudnik-Paluch, a journalist from Radio eM was the gala host.

The Silesian Scientific Award 2022 winners in the Employee category were:

• University of Silesia in Katowice – Jan P. Matuszyński, PhD

• Silesian University of Technology – Sebastian Student, PhD, DSc Eng. Assoc. Prof.

• Medical University of Silesia – Grzegorz Helbig, MD, PhD

• Jan Dlugosz University in Częstochowa – Prof. Yuriy Povstenko

• Czestochowa University of Technology – Prof. Eng. Leszek Rutkowski

• University of Economics in Katowice – Katarzyna Czernek-Marszałek, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof

• Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice – Arkadiusz Stanula, PhD, DSc, Assoc. Prof

• Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice – Prof. Jan Szmatloch

The winners in the Employee category received financial prizes of PLN 12,000, as well as a statuette designed by Katarzyna Pyka, PhD, Assoc. Prof. from the Faculty of Art and Educational Science of the University of Silesia.

The prize of PLN 6,000, funded by the Upper Silesian and Metropolis GZM, in the Doctoral Student category went to Justyna Mika, MSc Eng. from the Silesian University of Technology.

In turn, the Mayor’s Award, in the amount of PLN 6,000, funded by the Mayor of Katowice, was presented to Grzegorz Sierpinski, PhD, DSc Eng., Assoc. Prof from the Silesian University of Technology.
