To jest mój hołd dla artystów kina.<br>Dla operatorów filmowych, którzy – obok reżysera – są głównymi twórcami filmów. To oni komponują obraz, dobierają oświetlenie, decydują o ruchu kamery. Operatorzy kamery… Bez nich nie byłoby filmów, ponieważ film to przecież przede wszystkim obraz. Oni są Operatorami Filmowymi.<br><br>Ten projekt zrodził się z mojej fascynacji kinem, z doświadczeń zarówno jako operator kamery, jak i fotograf, a także z pragnienia, by pokazać tych, których nazwiska rzadko zapamiętujemy. Trudno je utrwalić w pamięci, bo napisy końcowe przesuwają się tak szybko. Moim celem i marzeniem jest wypełnienie tej luki – stworzenie galerii portretów artystów, których twarze zazwyczaj pozostają nieznane. To szczególnie ważne, bo bez Operatorów Filmowych żaden film nie mógłby powstać.<br><br>Projekt rozpocząłem w 1995 roku. Cinematographers – Operatorzy Filmowi. To setki podróży i tysiące przejechanych kilometrów. Kilosprzętu i godziny rozmów. Do tej pory sportretowałem ponad 140 operatorów. <br><br>Przez lata planowałem wydanie tej książki. Fotografowałem coraz więcej portretów, organizowałem wystawy, ale publikacja książki wciąż nie następowała. Jednak każdy projekt ma swój właściwy moment. W 2020 roku pandemia Covid zmusiła mnie do wstrzymania podróży. To wreszcie pozwoliło mi usiąść i zacząć pisać. W mojej pierwszej książce przedstawionych jest trzydziestu jeden artystów, a w wystawie – czterdziestu jeden.<br><br>To mój hołd dla artystów kina. This is my tribute to the artists of cinema.To the cinematographers who – apart from the director – are the main creators of motion <br>pictures. They are the ones who compose the image, choose the lighting, decide the camera movement. Cinematographers… <br>Without them there would be no movies, since a movie is after all an image.<br><br>This project stemmed from my fascination with motion pictures, from my experiences both as a cinematographer and a still <br>photographer, and also from my desire to present those, whose names we seldom know. It’s hard to memorise them, since the <br>credits at the end of movies scroll so fast.<br><br>My goal and my wish is to fill that void, to create a portrait gallery of the artists whose faces are generally not publicly known. This is <br>especially important as without Cinematographers no movie could ever be made. None.<br><br>The project started in 1995. Cinematographers. That’s hundreds of trips and thousands of travelled kilometres. Kilos of gear and hours of conversations. So far I have portrayed over 142 Cinematographers from 30 countries, on 4 continents. These world<br>class masters put their mark on the history of moviemaking, brought in a new language and technique both to fiction and documentaries. <br><br>They are extremely talented people.<br><br>The subjects of my photographs joined in on the creation of their portraits. It seemed only natural. One has to understand that a <br>cinematographer usually stands behind the camera. Yet here I placed them in front of it. At times they suggested the setting, other <br>times we searched for a suitable one together. They brought in the details, that in their personal history meant a lot.<br>On top of that there were the technological changes that have transformed the world and techniques beyond recognition. I myself <br>started with a Sinar analog camera, now I shoot digital.<br><br>For years I’ve planned to publish the book. I’ve been shooting more and more portraits, setting up shows, but the book’s publication was still not happening. Yet, every project has its right timing. In 2020 the Covid pandemic forced my travels to stop. This finally let me sit down to write. In my first book there are thirty one artists featured and forty one in the exhibition.<br><br>This is my tribute to the artists of cinema.
