The disappearance of glaciers is attracting the attention of scientists, politicians, business representatives and society at large. This process is an indicator of contemporary climate change, and the consequences of melting ice masses – the natural reservoir of our Earth's freshwater – affect each of us. Monitoring glaciers, including estimating their balance and recession rate – i.e. their size, thickness and movement – is therefore a global need. During the workshops, you will learn the secrets of creating glacier maps from the inside – from going to extreme terrain where data is collected in situ, to analyses based on modern satellite technologies. Using geoportals and websites, we will show the most spectacular changes in the polar world.
